Stephanie Barbee, LICSW

Hello!  Thanks for taking time to read about my approach to therapy.

Whether you need help adjusting to life changes, or are perhaps coping with stress, anxiety, and depression, or  want to address unresolved trauma, a course of regular psychotherapy can be very helpful.   I like to work collaboratively, from a stance of curiosity, respect and appreciation.  My work draws on a variety of approaches, particularly from psychodynamic psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) (a variant of CBT for trauma), among others.   I offer a framework that orients and normalizes the responses and behaviors that give people trouble.  I facilitate my clients in deeply listening to themselves by attending to the parts of them that need their own transformative human attention. This means getting to know the parts of oneself,  including feelings, thoughts, physical sensations, and beliefs.  This approach encourages people to access their native calm, curiosity and compassion in the present moment, key ingredients for healing.  By being in relationship with the various parts of yourself, you can develop more capacity for bringing yourself back into balance.  Invariably, the work leads us to parts that have been wounded and kept out of everyday awareness.  When these parts are safely witnessed and healed, there is the possibility of shifting burdensome beliefs and bringing in other needed qualities.  Unburdened and better resourced, we can feel more alive, more capable and connected,  with more moments of alignment with our values and intentions.  I believe that it helps if you have a spiritual path and I love working with people of different faiths and philosophies.  All this said, there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to therapy, so we may try different things to help you find relief and inspiration.   For more information on Internal Family Systems therapy, go to https://www.selfleadership.org/.
